# Bandaje Falls Trek 2026: Route, Rules, Cost from Bangalore

By GoWeekender Team. Published 2026-10-26.

The Bandaje Falls trek from Bangalore in 2026: the Rani Jhari route, the 12 km day, how the Aranya Vihaara permit and guide rules work now, a 2-day plan, and what it costs per head hosted or with your own car.

The Bandaje Falls trek is a 12 km day through shola forest and open grassland to a 200 ft waterfall in the Charmadi Ghat, 280 to 320 km from Bangalore. This guide covers the route, the 2026 permit and guide rules, a weekend plan and the cost per head.

## How do you do the Bandaje Falls trek from Bangalore?

Book the Bandaje Falls trek on Aranya Vihaara 1 to 30 days ahead (3 trekkers per booking), drive to Sunkasale near Kottigehara and sleep nearby. Self-bookers should be at the Rani Jhari viewpoint by 6 am, when the only slot opens; hosted groups follow the host's check-in. Expect 12 km, about 9 hours and a mandatory guide (October 2026).

## Bandaje Falls trek at a glance

Bandaje is a long, moderate-to-hard day hike with a fixed morning slot and a mandatory guide. These are the numbers that matter, from the official [Aranya Vihaara](https://aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in/) listing as of 26 October 2026 unless noted:

- **Distance:** 12 km in all as listed, about 6 to 6.5 km each way
- **Time on the trail:** 6 hours listed; plan about 9 hours with stops and lunch
- **Difficulty:** "adventurous" on the portal, "moderate" on the hosted trip's page; the Ballalarayana Durga fort trek alone is "moderate" on the portal
- **Start point:** Rani Jhari viewpoint, above Durgadahalli near Sunkasale, Mudigere taluk, Chikkamagaluru
- **The falls:** about 200 ft, locally called Bandaje Arbi ("arbi" means falls in Tulu), a tributary of the Netravati
- **Slot:** one slot, 6:00 to 11:00 am, with 300 places in total that day; groups walk in batches, each with its own guide
- **Booking:** 1 to 30 days ahead, at most 3 trekkers per booking on this listing
- **Best months:** September to February, per [Karnataka Tourism](https://karnatakatourism.org/tour-item/bandaje-falls/)

Ignore any page that puts the falls at 1,000 ft or more. The portal's own description explains the mix-up: from the cliff edge you see the falls about 1,000 ft below you.

## The route: Rani Jhari to the falls and back

The trail climbs through forest to the Ballalarayana Durga ridge, then drops through grassland and stream crossings to the falls, and you return the same way. Karnataka Tourism and the portal describe it in two legs:

1. **Rani Jhari to the fort ridge (about 3 km, 2 hours).** Distance from the portal, time from Karnataka Tourism. A steady climb through dense forest past the Rani Jhari rock and viewpoint. This is the steepest part.
2. **Fort ridge to Bandaje Falls (about 3.5 km, 2.5 hours).** Gentler: open shola grassland, then forest and a few streams before you reach the base of the falls.
3. **Back the same way.** The climb out of the falls valley comes when legs are tired, so keep water and energy for it.

Those legs make about 6.5 km and 4.5 hours out (the portal's 12 km total rounds down), which matches the hosted weekend's plan: walk from 8 am, lunch at the falls at 12:30 pm, start back around 2 pm, back at the homestay by about 6 pm. So plan about 9 hours on the trail including lunch. Treat the official 6 to 8 hours as the minimum.

The fort itself is a separate trek on the portal: the Ballalarayana Durga listing is 6 km return and 4 hours, to the ruins at 1,509 m, built by the Hoysala king Veera Ballala I. A Bandaje ticket gets you to the falls. On the hosted weekend listed below, the host notes that the fort detour needs separate permission at ₹100 per person, paid to the local guide (as of October 2026).

Older guides start at the Kalabhairaveshwara temple in Durgadahalli. The portal now lists Rani Jhari as the start for both treks, so expect your guide to begin there.

## 2026 rules for the Bandaje Falls trek

You can't walk in on your own any more. Since April 2026, every Forest Department trek in Karnataka needs an online booking and a certified guide, and Bandaje sits on that system. As of 26 October 2026:

- **Book on Aranya Vihaara only.** The ₹250 permit through the old Karnataka Ecotourism site that some guides still quote belongs to the previous system.
- **Booking window:** at least 1 day and at most 30 days ahead.
- **Group size per booking:** 3 trekkers on the Bandaje listing. Caps vary by trek, so don't assume a bigger trek's limit applies. A group of six needs two bookings for the same date.
- **ID:** carry the original of the ID used to book. It is checked on trek day.
- **Refunds:** cancel 8 or more days ahead and get 50% back; within 7 days, nothing ([refund policy](https://aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in/cancellationpolicy)). The portal's home page dates this rule to 15 July 2026.
- **Guides:** one certified local nature guide for every 10 trekkers, even for a solo booking, with GPS walkie-talkies and a call to base every 30 minutes ([Deccan Chronicle, 17 April 2026](https://www.deccanchronicle.com/southern-states/karnataka/trekking-without-nature-guide-wont-be-allowed-karnataka-forest-minister-releases-sop-1951020)).
- **Banned on the trail:** campfires, loud speakers, single-use plastic and carry bags, flash photography and sharp metal objects. Carry your waste back.
- **Minors and seniors:** minors need a parent's consent letter; senior citizens need a fitness certificate.

The portal shows the fee at checkout once you sign in.

## When to reach the Bandaje start point

Plan to be at the Rani Jhari viewpoint by 6 am. The portal's general notice asks trekkers to report at the start point at least 10 minutes before their slot's start time, and Bandaje's only slot starts at 6 am.

The portal doesn't say how late in the 6 to 11 am window a group can still start. The hosted weekend listed below checks in at 7:30 am, so ask whoever books your slot what time your guide expects you. If you book it yourself, plan on 6 am and call the Forest Department helpline (1926, listed on the portal) if you're delayed. An early start also leaves daylight for the climb back.

> **Why Bandaje has a guide rule**
>
> Karnataka Tourism warns that it is easy to get lost on this trail. On 30 August 2026 the Forest Department announced daily entry limits, GPS tracking and blacklisting of trekkers or guides who violate entry conditions or stray from designated paths, and listed "a critical incident at Bandaje Waterfalls" among the reasons ([newkerala, 30 August 2026](https://www.newkerala.com/news/a/karnataka-forest-department-unveils-new-safety-framework-strict-981.htm)). Stay with your guide, keep away from the cliff edge above the falls, and don't enter the plunge pool or wet rocks unless the guide says that spot is safe.

## Which side of Bandaje is open: Sunkasale or Belthangady

Plan from the Chikkamagaluru side. The falls sit in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada, and there is an old route up from the Volambra side near Belthangady. On 26 October 2026 Aranya Vihaara listed the Bandaje Falls trek only under Chikkamagaluru, starting at Rani Jhari. The Dakshina Kannada list showed only Netravati.

So a Bangalore group drives to Sunkasale, on the Kottigehara–Kalasa road, rather than to Belthangady. The portal notes there is no bus to the base, so you need your own vehicle or a hosted trip.

## Escapes to Bandaje Falls

- [Bandaje Falls Weekend Trek from Bangalore](https://www.goweekender.in/escapes/bandaje-falls-weekend-trek-from-bangalore) — 2D/1N — from ₹4,399 — next 29 Oct 2026

## Bandaje Falls trek from Bangalore: the 2-day plan

The usual plan is an overnight drive, a full trek day and a slow second day. Below is the published plan of the hosted Bandaje weekend on GoWeekender. The host arranges the permit and the 7:30 am check-in at the start point.

If you book the slot yourself and drive, don't drive all night and then walk 12 km. Leave Bangalore in the afternoon, sleep at a homestay near Sunkasale or Kottigehara, and reach Rani Jhari by 6 am. After a 9-hour trek, stay a second night rather than driving 320 km back that evening, unless you have a fresh second driver.

### Night 1: the drive

Pickups run from 7:30 to 9:30 pm, then about 320 km via Hassan, Belur and Mudigere to a homestay near Sunkasale, arriving around 6 am. Eat dinner before you board: the hosted trip doesn't include it, and you want to sleep on the drive.

### Day 1: the trek

- **6:30 am:** breakfast; pick up a packed lunch
- **7:30 am:** short drive to Rani Jhari; ID and permit check, guide briefing
- **8:00 am:** start the climb to the fort ridge
- **12:30 pm:** lunch at the falls; get in the water only where the guide allows
- **2:00 pm:** start back (the optional fort detour fits here)
- **6:00 pm:** back at the homestay for tea, dinner and an early night

### Day 2: coffee estates and Kodige Falls

Take a slow walk through the Durgadahalli coffee estates and a 10-minute walk to Kodige Falls, a 30 ft cascade with a shallow pool. Leave after lunch to reach Bangalore around 11 pm.

## Bandaje trek cost per head: hosted vs your own car

A self-drive group of four spends roughly ₹3,400 each with one homestay night, or ₹5,600 with two, before the permit and tolls. The hosted weekend is about ₹4,620 with the permit, guide, transport and most meals in. The maths, as of October 2026:

**Hosted weekend on GoWeekender** (from the live trip page):

- Price: from ₹4,399 plus 5% GST, about ₹4,620 (October 2026); the trip cards above show the current price
- Included: transport, shared homestay (separate zones for men and women), most meals, trek permit and forest fees, a trek leader and a local guide
- Extra: dinner on the way out, day-2 lunch and the fort permission (₹100); the trip page lists the rest
- The catch: it's an overnight drive of 8 hours or more in a non-AC tempo traveller or mini bus, and you trek the morning you arrive
- Bookings: one booking, no 3-per-booking juggling

**Your own car, group of four:**

- Fuel: about 640 km round trip on the host's 320 km route. At 15 km per litre (a petrol hatchback or sedan) that is about 43 litres, or roughly ₹4,770 at the ₹110.93 a litre [BankBazaar listed for Bengaluru](https://www.bankbazaar.com/fuel/petrol-price-bangalore.html) on 26 October 2026: about ₹1,200 each
- Permit: the Aranya Vihaara fee shown at checkout, times four, booked in two bookings
- Stay with meals: about ₹2,200 per head per night, going by one Kalasa homestay on the same road ([Katikhan Homestay's tariff](https://www.travelmalnad.com/packages-at-homestay-in-kalasa), standard room, checked October 2026)
- Also: road meals, a packed lunch and tolls on the Bengaluru–Hassan highway

Fuel plus one night is about ₹3,400 per head; a second night, the safer choice after the trek, makes it about ₹5,600. Add the portal fee, which shows only at checkout once you sign in. The [Bandaje weekend trip page](https://www.goweekender.in/escapes/bandaje-falls-weekend-trek-from-bangalore) lists exactly what's in and out.

## Best time for the Bandaje Falls trek

Go between September and February; October and November, just after the monsoon, are the sweet spot. Karnataka Tourism recommends September to February, warns that the monsoon trail turns slushy with leeches, and says to avoid summer, when the forest is dry and the falls carry little water.

- **September to November:** the falls are at their fullest after the monsoon, the grass is green and the streams are crossable
- **December to February:** cool, clear mornings and the best views from the ridge; the falls thin out as the months pass
- **March to May:** hot, shadeless grassland and a weak waterfall. Pick another trek
- **June to August:** the heaviest flow but slippery rock, swollen streams and leeches. Under the August 2026 framework, routes can also be suspended when tigers, leopards, elephants or bears are detected ([newkerala](https://www.newkerala.com/news/a/karnataka-forest-department-unveils-new-safety-framework-strict-981.htm)), so check the portal before you plan

## How hard is the Bandaje trek, and who should skip it

Bandaje suits anyone who can walk 12 km on uneven ground in a day; it is not a first-ever hike. The portal grades it "adventurous" while the host rates it moderate for people with basic fitness, and the return climb out of the falls valley is where most people slow down.

- **Fine for:** regular walkers and runners who have done a shorter trek, and groups willing to keep a steady pace all day
- **Think twice if:** you have knee trouble on steep descents, or have never walked more than 5 km on a trail
- **Skip in monsoon if:** you're uneasy on wet rock or in knee-deep streams

A good warm-up is a shorter trek near Bangalore a few weeks before. Our [Karnataka trek booking guide](https://www.goweekender.in/blogs/karnataka-trek-online-booking) walks through the portal step by step.

## What to pack for Bandaje

Pack light but cover water, grip and rain. Most of the list comes from the host's own trip FAQ:

- The original ID you booked with, plus a photocopy
- Trekking shoes with good grip (the rocks near the falls are slippery) and floaters for the homestay
- 2 litres of water in reusable bottles, a lunch box and trail snacks
- A light raincoat or poncho and a waterproof phone cover
- Quick-dry clothes, a warm layer for the early start and a small towel
- Salt or a leech repellent in the wet months (the host suggests a Dettol spray), a basic first-aid kit and personal medicines
- Cash for the fort permission and roadside meals; mobile network is patchy on the trail

Leave behind single-use plastic bottles and wrappers you can't carry back, speakers and anything for a campfire.

## Doing Bandaje as a group

Bandaje works best with four to eight people, but the booking rules shape how you plan it.

- **Split the bookings.** Some portal treks take bigger bookings; Bandaje's listing doesn't. At 3 trekkers per booking, a group of 5 to 6 needs two bookings and 7 to 9 needs three. Have two people book the same date in the same sitting so you don't end up on different days.
- **Book early for weekends.** The portal rated Bandaje's demand "high" on 26 October 2026, and refunds shrink to zero inside 7 days.
- **One guide per 10.** Guides are assigned at one per 10 trekkers, so a group bigger than 10 may be split across guides.
- **Agree the pace before 8 am.** The slowest walker sets the group's return time.

No crew yet? Many people on the hosted Bandaje weekend join solo, and the host says a female trek leader goes with every group. ## Frequently asked questions

### How long is the Bandaje Falls trek?

About 12 km in all as listed on Aranya Vihaara, roughly 6 to 6.5 km each way from the Rani Jhari viewpoint. Plan about 9 hours on the trail including lunch at the falls; the official 6 to 8 hour figures are the minimum.

### Do I need a permit for the Bandaje Falls trek?

Yes. As of October 2026 you book the Bandaje Falls trek on Aranya Vihaara, the Karnataka Forest Department portal, 1 to 30 days ahead. Each booking covers up to 3 trekkers, and you must show the original ID you booked with on the day.

### Is a guide mandatory for Bandaje?

Yes. Under Karnataka's April 2026 trekking rules, every batch walks with a certified local nature guide, one for every 10 trekkers, and no one may trek a Forest Department route without one.

### What is the slot timing for the Bandaje Falls trek?

Aranya Vihaara lists one slot, 6:00 to 11:00 am, and its general notice asks trekkers to report at the start point at least 10 minutes before the slot starts. Plan to be at Rani Jhari by 6 am, ideally after a night at a homestay nearby.

### How far is Bandaje Falls from Bangalore?

The trailhead near Sunkasale in Chikkamagaluru district is about 280 to 320 km from Bangalore by road, depending on the route, via Hassan, Belur and Mudigere. There is no bus to the base, so drive and sleep nearby the night before, or join a hosted trip.

### Is Ballalarayana Durga fort part of the Bandaje trek?

Not automatically. Aranya Vihaara lists Ballalarayana Durga as a separate 6 km trek. On the hosted GoWeekender weekend, the host says the fort detour needs separate permission at ₹100 per person (October 2026), paid to the local guide on the day, and depends on time and conditions.

### What is the best time for the Bandaje Falls trek?

September to February, with October and November best because they come just after the monsoon, when the falls are full and the streams are usually manageable. The monsoon brings slush and leeches, and from March to May the falls carry little water.

### Can beginners do the Bandaje Falls trek?

Fit beginners can, if they walk regularly and are ready for 12 km and a steep climb back from the falls. The host rates it moderate for basic fitness while the portal grades it adventurous, so do a shorter trek first if you have never hiked.

### Can I camp near Bandaje Falls?

Plan on a homestay near Sunkasale or Kottigehara instead. Karnataka Tourism's page and older guides still describe camping, but Aranya Vihaara now sells Bandaje as a single 6 to 11 am day slot, and the April 2026 rules ban campfires on trekking routes.

### How much does the Bandaje Falls trek cost per person?

A hosted weekend from Bangalore on GoWeekender starts at ₹4,399 plus 5% GST as of October 2026, with transport, stay, most meals, permit and guide included. A self-drive group of four spends about ₹1,200 each on fuel, plus the portal fee, stay and food.
