## About this trip

Shut the laptop on Friday evening, board the bus as the city lights thin out, and wake up in the Western Ghats. This is a two-day, one-night backpacking weekend to Chikmagalur, built around big views, cold water and very good coffee.

Saturday is the big one. A 3 km climb takes you to Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak at 6,330 ft, where the ridgelines disappear into cloud. An off-road jeep trail then drops you at Jhari Waterfalls for a dip in the cold cascade, and the day closes with sunset over Hirekolale Lake and a campfire back at the hilltop campsite: music, dinner and long conversations under an open sky.

Sunday slows down. A morning walk through the coffee estate, outdoor games on the lawn, then a boat ride and water sports at Yagachi Reservoir, and finally the 12th-century Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, where Hoysala artisans covered every inch of stone in carving. Lunch on the way, a dinner halt on the highway, and you are back in Bengaluru by about 11:30 PM.

You travel in an AC tempo traveller or mini bus with an experienced trip captain, stay in tents and rooms on a multiple-sharing basis, and share the weekend with a small group of strangers who rarely stay strangers. Come for the peak, stay for the people.

## Itinerary

### Day 1: Mullayanagiri Trek, Jhari Falls & Hirekolale Lake

The weekend starts on Friday night. Pickups run across Bengaluru — New Udupi Grand in HSR Layout at 9:30 PM, KLM Fashion Mall in Marathahalli at 10:00 PM, Domlur Sky Walk on Old Airport Road at 10:25 PM and Konkan Express near Yeshwanthpur Metro at 11:00 PM — and once everyone is aboard the AC tempo traveller or mini bus, your trip captain runs through the plan for the weekend. It is roughly an eight-hour overnight drive with music, travel games and cool night air.

You get to the forest campsite early on Saturday morning, freshen up and fuel up with a hot breakfast amidst the hills. The day then belongs to Mullayanagiri: a 3 km trek to Karnataka's highest point at 6,330 ft, with cloud-kissed valley views the whole way up. After lunch in town comes a high-energy off-road jeep ride to the roaring Jhari (Buttermilk) Falls for a splash in the mountain pools, then sunset at Hirekolale Lake as the sky turns gold over still water. The day closes back at the campsite with a campfire, music, dinner and stargazing.

- 6:00 AM Arrival & Forest Campsite Check-In: Reach Chikmagalur in the early morning and check into the campsite tucked into the hills. Freshen up and settle in before the day starts.
- 8:00 AM Breakfast Amidst the Hills: A hot breakfast served at the campsite, with the Western Ghats rolling away in every direction.
- 9:00 AM Trek to Mullayanagiri Peak (6,330 ft): Drive to the base and climb 3 km to Karnataka's highest point. Sweeping views of the Western Ghats, a hilltop shrine at the summit, then the descent.
- 1:00 PM Local Delicacy Lunch Break: Stop at a popular restaurant in town for authentic Malnad food. Lunch is on your own and is not part of the package.
- 3:00 PM Off-Road Jeep Ride to Jhari Waterfalls: A bumpy 4x4 trail through dense jungle drops you at the crashing Jhari (Buttermilk) Falls for a dip in the cold mountain pools. Jeep charges are not included.
- 6:00 PM Sunset at Hirekolale Lake: Unwind on the shore as the sky turns gold over still water ringed by hills. One of the best sunsets in the region.
- 8:00 PM Campfire Night, Music & Starlit Dinner: Back at the campsite for icebreaker games, music and long conversations around a crackling fire, then dinner under an open sky.

### Day 2: Coffee Estate Walk, Yagachi Reservoir & Belur Temple

Sunday opens with coffee. A slow walk through the estate around the campsite explains how the region's beans are grown, picked and dried, and there is time for volleyball, basketball and lawn games before a hearty breakfast and check-out.

From there it is on to Yagachi Reservoir for speed boating and water sports, then the 12th-century Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, where the Hoysala stone carving is among the finest anywhere in the country. Lunch is at a local restaurant before the drive back, with a dinner halt on the highway. You should be back in Bengaluru by about 11:30 PM, tired in the best way.

- 7:00 AM Coffee Estate Walk: A slow guided walk through the plantations around the campsite: how the region's beans are grown, picked and dried, with the smell of coffee everywhere.
- 8:00 AM Outdoor Games at the Campsite: Volleyball, basketball and lawn games on the property before the day gets going.
- 9:00 AM Breakfast & Check-Out: A hearty breakfast at the campsite, then pack up and check out.
- 11:00 AM Water Sports & Boating at Yagachi Reservoir: Speed boating, jet skiing and banana boat rides on the reservoir, or simply time along the picturesque water bank.
- 1:00 PM Belur Chennakeshava Temple: The 12th-century Hoysala temple at Belur, where artisans covered every pillar and wall in some of the most detailed stone carving in India.
- 3:00 PM Lunch at a Local Restaurant: A relaxed lunch stop on the way out of the hills. Lunch is on your own and is not part of the package.
- 4:00 PM Return Drive to Bengaluru: Board the bus for the drive home, with a dinner halt on the highway. Expected arrival in Bengaluru around 11:30 PM.

## FAQs

### What should I carry?

Soft copy of your Aadhaar card (mandatory), comfortable trekking wear such as cargo or track pants, shorts and T-shirts, good-grip trekking shoes, a small backpack for the day, two litres of water in reusable bottles, cap and sunglasses, sunscreen, a personal medical kit with any medicines you need, flip-flops for lazing around the campsite, a power bank, polythene bags for wet or muddy clothes, and some extra cash for meals and activities not covered in the package.

### What is the check-in policy and how strictly is the daily activity timeline followed?

Activity & Daily Timeline: The hourly activity schedule provided is tentative and designed to give you the best experience. The order of places visited or timings may vary or be adjusted due to weather conditions, traffic, local government restrictions, or road conditions.
Early Check-in: Standard check-in times apply as per the stay policy. Early check-in is strictly subject to room availability on arrival at the property. Where early check-in isn't available, common washrooms and freshen-up areas are provided so you can get ready for the day's plan without delay.

### Is it safe to travel with strangers?

Safety is built into everything we do. Every member completes ID verification before joining. Our community review system means travellers build a reputation through completed trips. Plus, tribes typically form through chat and video calls before any trip happens, so by the time you meet, they're not really strangers anymore.

### Are your trips safe for women?

On all of our trips, safety is non-negotiable and our priority. Female outdoor leaders accompany every group, the homestays and tent accommodations are secure, and we guarantee separate sleeping arrangements for men and women.

### How does GoWeekender match travellers?

Our Vibe Check algorithm goes beyond basic preferences. We look at your travel pace (relaxed explorer versus packed itinerary), adventure appetite (chill vibes versus adrenaline junkie), budget comfort zone, and interests like photography, street food or trekking. The result is that you get matched with travellers who genuinely get you, not just people heading to the same place.
