## About this trip

Coorg is known for mist, coffee estates and long weekends spent doing very little. This one goes the other way: an offbeat ridge trek in the heart of Kodagu district, on a trail locals call Dumchi Gudde.

The walk is about 9 km in total and graded easy - out through coffee, mango and cardamom plantations, into a gradual forest incline alive with bird calls, and up a final steep ridge to Tavoor peak for views across the Kopatty hills. Lunch is carried up and eaten at the top. Afterwards you drop down to the sacred Triveni Sangam, where three rivers meet, for a cold dip, and the evening ends with high tea, a Kodagu-style dinner and a campfire at the homestay.

Day two is slower: the Secret Falls tucked off the main road, then Talacauvery at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills where the Kaveri rises, before the drive back to Bengaluru.

Good to know: the trek runs best in the monsoon months of June to September, when the ghats are at their greenest. Stays are shared homestay or tents with separate zones for men and women, Karnataka Forest Department entry fees are covered, and a soft copy of your Aadhaar or Voter ID is needed for the permits.

## Itinerary

### Day 1: DAY 1: Tavoor Ridge Trek & a Dip at Triveni Sangam

The trek begins the night before, in Bengaluru. Board your push-back vehicle at your preferred pick-up point, meet the trek lead, get through the ice-breakers, and settle in for the 280 km overnight drive into the misty heart of Kodagu.

Pick-up locations & timings:
08:50 PM - 09:00 PM: Udupi Grand, Teacher's Colony, HSR Layout
09:25 PM - 09:30 PM: Yamaha Showroom, Domlur
09:45 PM - 09:50 PM: St Mark's Cathedral Bus Stop
10:25 PM - 10:30 PM: Nayandahalli Metro

Day one is the trek day. Reach the homestay, freshen up and eat, then head out on the offbeat Tavoor Hills trail - locally called Dumchi Gudde - through coffee, mango and cardamom plantations into a gradual forest incline alive with bird calls. The last stretch is a steep ridge push to Tavoor peak, with the Kopatty hills opening out on every side. Lunch is carried up and eaten at the top before the descent to the sacred Triveni Sangam for a dip. The evening closes with high tea, a Coorg-style dinner and a campfire under the stars, weather permitting.

- 6:00 AM Arrival in Kodagu & Freshen Up at the Homestay: The overnight coach winds into the Western Ghats at first light. Reach the homestay, freshen up and leave your bags before the trail starts.
- 7:00 AM Homestay Breakfast & Trek Briefing: A light breakfast at the stay, then a briefing from your outdoor leader on the route, the forest rules and what to carry up the ridge.
- 9:00 AM Trek to Tavoor Ridge (Dumchi Gudde): Out through coffee, mango and cardamom plantations, then a steady forest climb to the final ridge push for views over the Kopatty hills. Most of the weekend 9 km sits here.
- 1:00 PM Packed Lunch on the Ridge: Lunch is packed and carried up, eaten at a clearing near the top with the valley in front of you, before the descent begins.
- 4:00 PM Holy Dip at Triveni Sangam: A stop at the confluence Kodagu holds sacred, where three rivers meet. Cold, clear water and a good place to sit for a while after the descent.
- 6:00 PM High Tea at the Homestay: Tea and hot snacks back at the stay as the mist rolls in and the evening cold settles over the estate.
- 8:00 PM Coorg-Style Dinner & Campfire: Dinner cooked Kodagu-style at the homestay, then a campfire if the weather holds. Sleeping zones are separate for men and women.

### Day 2: DAY 2: Secret Falls, Talacauvery & the Drive Home

Day two is the gentler half. Breakfast at the homestay and check-out, then an offbeat stop at the Secret Falls tucked away off the main road, and on up to Talacauvery, where the Kaveri rises at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills and the steps above the tank look out across Kodagu.

Lunch on the way down is on your own, and the vehicle turns towards Bengaluru through the coffee estates, reaching the drop points by about 10:30 PM.

Timings are indicative. The order of stops can shuffle with weather, traffic or road conditions, but every experience and location listed here gets covered.

- 7:00 AM Homestay Breakfast & Check-Out: Wake up to plantation quiet and cold Kodagu air. Breakfast at the stay, then pack up, collect your luggage and check out.
- 9:00 AM Offbeat Stop at Secret Falls: A short walk in to a waterfall most Coorg itineraries skip. The rocks stay slippery right through the monsoon, so mind your footing.
- 11:00 AM Drive Up to Talacauvery: A winding climb past Bhagamandala towards the Brahmagiri slopes, gaining height as the mist closes in around the road.
- 12:00 PM Talacauvery: Source of the Kaveri: The spot where the Kaveri rises. On a clear day the steps above the tank open out over the whole Kodagu valley.
- 2:00 PM Lunch En Route (Self-Sponsored): A stop at a local place on the way down. This meal is not part of the package, so carry some cash for it.
- 3:00 PM Return Drive to Bengaluru: Load up and start the drive back down the ghat road, out through the coffee estates and onto the highway.
- 9:00 PM Dinner Halt & Drop-Offs in Bengaluru: A quick dinner stop on the highway (on your own), then drop-offs at the same points, expected by about 10:30 PM depending on traffic.

## FAQs

### What should I carry?

A soft copy of your Aadhaar or Voter ID, which is mandatory for the forest permits. Then: warm layers or a fleece/down jacket, a sun cap and sunscreen, a small backpack for the trail, a compact raincoat or backpack cover, trekking shoes with good grip, energy bars, and two one-litre water bottles.

### How hard is the trek, and who can join?

The trek is graded easy and runs about 9 km in total. It starts through plantations, becomes a gradual forest incline, and finishes with one steep push up the ridge to Tavoor peak. Anyone aged 10 and above with basic fitness can do it, and groups are capped at 25. Monsoon trails stay slippery, so shoes with grip matter more here than fitness does.

### What are the travel, stay and meal arrangements?

Travel is a non-AC tempo traveller or minibus with push-back seats, depending on group size, and the drive is about 280 km each way overnight. The stay is a shared homestay or tents with separate zones for men and women. Meals covered are breakfast on both days plus a packed lunch, high tea and dinner on Day 1. Day 2 lunch on the way back is on you.

### How closely is the daily timeline followed?

Timings are indicative. The order of stops can shift with weather, traffic, road conditions or forest department restrictions, but every experience and location listed does get covered. The campfire runs only if the weather allows. The trail is at its best in the monsoon months, June to September, which is also when it is greenest and most slippery.

### Are the trips safe for women and solo travellers?

Yes, and most people on this trek come solo. Sleeping zones are separate for men and women, the homestay is vetted before the group arrives, and a trained outdoor leader plus a local guide stay with the group throughout. Every traveller completes ID verification before joining.
