## About this trip

Kumara Parvatha, also known as Pushpagiri, rises to about 5,620 ft on the border of Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada, inside the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the toughest and most rewarding treks in South India: a full-day traverse from Beedehalli on the Coorg side, over the summit and Shesha Parvatha, and down the long forest trail to the temple town of Kukke Subramanya.

We leave Bangalore in the evening and drive overnight to a homestay near Somwarpet. After an early breakfast and the permit check at Beedehalli, the climb begins: about 7-8 km of steep trail through dense forest, rocky paths and open grassland, with the views of the Western Ghats widening as you gain height. From the summit the ridge runs about 1 km to Shesha Parvatha, then the descent passes the old stone Kallu Mantapa to Bhatrumane, a well-known rest stop, and on through about 7 km of dense, often slippery forest to Kukke Subramanya. The whole traverse is about 22 km and takes 10-12 hours depending on pace and weather. The vehicle meets us at Kukke and takes us back to the homestay for dinner.

The second day is easy. After breakfast we visit Mallali Falls, a 200 ft waterfall in the foothills of the Pushpagiri range, and then Namdroling Monastery, the Golden Temple at Bylakuppe, one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in India. After a self-sponsored lunch we drive back, reaching Bangalore around 11 PM.

This is a long, demanding day on foot. Come with good fitness, good shoes, energy bars and plenty of water.

Transport, the homestay night, 2 breakfasts, a packed lunch and a dinner, forest entry fees and permits, and trek leaders are included.

## FAQs

### What should I carry?

A soft copy of your Aadhaar or Voter ID (required for the permit); a small backpack for the trek; energy bars and a glucose packet (required); 2 litres of water; a lunch box and spoon for the packed lunch; shoes with good grip and flip-flops; a raincoat and bag cover; a warm layer; a torch or headlamp; toiletries; a change of clothes and poly bags for wet ones; a power bank; and cash for meals not included.

### How hard is the Kumara Parvatha trek?

It is rated moderate to hard and is one of the toughest weekend treks in South India: about 22 km in one day, 10-12 hours on foot. The first 7-8 km climb to the 5,620 ft summit is steep and strenuous, and the long descent to Kukke is rocky, then slippery in the forest. You need good fitness and some trekking experience. The minimum age is 12.

### Are permits included? When should I book?

Yes, forest entry fees and trek permits are included and arranged for you. Permits are limited and issued by the Forest Department through Aranya Vihaara, so booking at least 30 days ahead is recommended. Bookings are confirmed subject to permit availability; if permits are not issued for your date, the booking amount is refunded.

### Where does the trek start and end?

It starts at the Beedehalli checkpost on the Coorg side and ends at Kukke Subramanya, so it is a one-way traverse. The vehicle drops you at Beedehalli, picks the group up at Kukke in the evening and drives back to the homestay near Somwarpet. Freshening up at Kukke before the drive is self-paid.

### Is it safe to join solo or with strangers?

Yes. Most people on this trek come solo or in small groups. The group is led by trained trek leaders, a female trek leader accompanies every group, and rooms at the homestay are separate for men and women.
