## About this trip

Kurinjal Peak sits deep inside Kudremukh National Park, quieter and far less crowded than its famous neighbour. It is a slow, soulful trek rather than a race to the top: tall shola forest that lets in just enough light, streams and little falls that appear out of nowhere, and meadows that open up suddenly in the middle of the woods.

We leave Bangalore in the evening and drive overnight to a homestay in the Western Ghats, arriving as the sky begins to lighten. After breakfast, jeeps take the group along bumpy village roads into the national park to the trek base. The trail runs about 14 km in all, through forest, stream crossings and misty clearings, with a packed lunch midway before the summit, where the views over the valleys are wide, quiet and seemingly endless.

We are back at the base by about 5:30 PM and return to the homestay for chai, snacks, dinner and stories around the bonfire.

The second day is easy on the legs: the Samse tea estate, the hidden Kodige Falls with its cool natural pool and, time permitting, the Hoysala-era Chennakesava Temple at Belur on the way home. We reach Bangalore around 10 PM.

Forest entry fees and permits, the jeep to the trek base, a trained trek leader and a local guide, the homestay night and the listed meals are included.

## Itinerary

### Day 1: DAY 1: Overnight Drive & Kurinjal Peak Trek

Pickups start at 8:05 PM the evening before (Domlur, Cubbon Park, Mekhri Circle, Yeshwanthpur by 9:30 PM); please have dinner before boarding. We drive about 320 km overnight in a non-AC push-back seat vehicle and reach the homestay at first light. After breakfast, jeeps take us into Kudremukh National Park for the full-day trek to Kurinjal peak and back, ending with chai, dinner and a bonfire at the homestay.

- 5:30 AM Arrive at the homestay & freshen up: Reach the homestay in the Western Ghats as the sky begins to lighten and freshen up. Stays are homestay or tents on shared basis, with separate zones for men and women.
- 6:15 AM Breakfast (included): A warm local breakfast, finished by 6:45 AM. Packed lunch for the trek is handed out here.
- 6:45 AM Jeep ride to the trek base: Jeeps take the group along bumpy village roads into Kudremukh National Park to the trek base, where forest permits are checked.
- 7:30 AM Start the Kurinjal trek: About 14 km in all, through dense shola forest, stream crossings and misty clearings that open onto meadows and views of the valleys.
- 12:00 PM Packed lunch in the forest (included): A picnic-style packed lunch midway, before the final push to the summit.
- 1:00 PM Kurinjal summit: Wide, quiet views over the valleys and hills of Kudremukh National Park. Time at the top before the descent begins in the early afternoon.
- 5:30 PM Reach the base & jeep back to the homestay: Walk back down through the forest to the base by about 5:30 PM, then take the jeep back to the homestay.
- 6:30 PM High tea, dinner & bonfire (included): Hot chai and snacks after the trek, then dinner and stories around the bonfire before an early night.

### Day 2: DAY 2: Samse Tea Estate, Kodige Falls & Return

## FAQs

### What should I carry?

A soft copy of your Aadhaar or Voter ID (mandatory for the permit); a small backpack for the trek; trekking shoes with good grip; a compact raincoat or backpack cover; warm layers or a fleece jacket; a sun cap and sunscreen; energy bars; 2 one-litre water bottles; and some cash for the Day 2 lunch and the Kodige Falls jeep, which are not included.

### How hard is the Kurinjal trek?

It is a full day on foot: about 14 km in all, from 7:30 AM to around 5:30 PM, through forest, stream crossings and meadows. The pace is unhurried, but the distance makes it moderately demanding, so basic fitness and some walking practice help. In the monsoon the trail is slippery and leeches are common.

### Are permits included? When should I book?

Yes. Kurinjal is inside Kudremukh National Park and needs a Karnataka Forest Department permit, which is included and arranged for you. Permits are limited and sell out, so book well in advance where you can. The trek runs only when permits are issued for your date, and the ID you carry must match the one you booked with.

### What are the stay and food like?

One night at a homestay (or tents) in the Western Ghats, on shared basis with separate zones for men and women. Facilities are comfortable but basic, and the food is simple local fare. Please have dinner before boarding on the first evening. Alcohol, intoxicants and smoking are not allowed at any point during the trip.

### Is it safe to join solo or with strangers?

Yes. Most people on this trek come solo or in small groups. The group is led by a trained trek leader together with a local guide, a female trek leader accompanies every group, and sleeping areas are separate for men and women.
