## About this trip

Netravati Peak sits between Samse and Belthangady in the Chikmagalur hills, near where the Netravati river begins its journey. It is one of the most varied short treks in the Western Ghats: one minute you are scrambling up a rocky slope, the next you are in dense shola forest, and then out on open grassland with peaks all around.

We leave Bangalore in the evening and drive overnight to a homestay near Samse. After breakfast, an open jeep takes the group about 14 km through tea, banana and areca plantations to the trek base, with a stop at the forest checkpoint for permits and a bag check. The trail opens with a short, steep rocky climb, then levels into forest, where a two-tiered waterfall waits deep in the woods. Beyond the trees the path rolls out onto grassland beside the young Netravati stream, past a false summit, to the real top at about 1,520 m (4,986 ft). On a clear day Kudremukh peak is visible on the horizon.

Lunch is at the summit, and the descent back to the base takes about an hour and a half. The jeeps bring everyone back to the homestay for high tea, a bonfire and dinner.

The second day is easy: the Samse tea estate, the offbeat Kodige Falls in the forest and, time permitting, the Hoysala-era Chennakesava Temple at Belur, reaching Bangalore around 10 PM.

Forest entry fees and permits, the jeep to the trek base, a trained trek leader and a local guide, the homestay night and the listed meals are included.

## Itinerary

### Day 1: DAY 1: Overnight Drive & Netravati Peak Trek

Pickups start at 7:30 PM the evening before (HSR Layout, Domlur, Cubbon Park, Mekhri Circle, Yeshwanthpur by 9:20 PM); please have dinner before boarding, as there is no dinner stop. We drive about 380 km overnight in a non-AC push-back seat vehicle and reach the homestay near Samse at dawn. After breakfast, an open jeep takes us to the trek base for the climb to Netravati peak and back, ending with high tea, a bonfire and dinner at the homestay.

- 5:30 AM Arrive at the homestay & freshen up: Reach the homestay near Samse at first light and freshen up. Stays are on shared basis, with separate zones for men and women.
- 6:15 AM Breakfast & warm-up (included): Hot vegetarian breakfast, finished by 6:45 AM, then a short warm-up and trail briefing from the trek leader. Packed lunch is handed out here.
- 6:45 AM Open jeep ride to the trek base: About 14 km standing in the back of a jeep over rough, muddy roads through tea, banana and areca plantations, with a stop at the forest checkpoint for permits and a bag check.
- 7:30 AM Start the Netravati trek: A steep rocky climb to start, then level trail through dense shola forest to a two-tiered waterfall, and out onto grassland beside the young Netravati stream.
- 11:30 AM Netravati summit & packed lunch (included): Past a false summit to the real top at about 4,986 ft. Lunch with views over cloud-draped valleys; on a clear day Kudremukh peak is visible in the distance.
- 1:00 PM Descend to the base: Walk back down the same route, about 1.5 hours downhill depending on the weather, with time for breaks at the streams.
- 4:30 PM Jeep back to the homestay: The jeeps wait at the base and bring everyone back to the homestay by about 5:30 PM.
- 6:00 PM High tea, bonfire & dinner (included): Wash up, then high tea and snacks around the bonfire, then a vegetarian dinner and an early night.

### Day 2: DAY 2: Samse Tea Estate, Kodige Falls & Return

An easy day after the trek. Breakfast and check-out at the homestay, a walk through the Samse tea estate, then the offbeat Kodige Falls in the forest. Lunch on the way is self-sponsored, and if time permits we stop at the Chennakesava Temple in Belur before reaching Bangalore around 10 PM.

- 1:30 PM Lunch en route (self-sponsored): Lunch at a local eatery on the way. Options are simple and limited. Not included in the price.
- 3:30 PM Chennakesava Temple, Belur (if time permits): The 12th-century Hoysala temple, famous for its intricate carvings and sculptures.

## FAQs

### What should I carry?

A hard copy of the same photo ID you booked with (needed for the permit); a 30L backpack and a 10L daypack for the trek; hiking shoes with grip, floaters, a raincoat and a phone cover; 2 water bottles and a lunch box with spoon; 3 T-shirts, quick-dry pants, shorts, socks, a warm layer and a towel; toiletries; personal medicines and a Dettol spray for leeches; a power bank, poly bags for wet clothes, and some cash.

### How hard is the Netravati trek?

It is rated moderate: about 10 km there and back to roughly 4,986 ft, usually 6 to 8 hours including the summit break. It starts with a short, steep rocky climb, then evens out through forest and grassland. First-timers with basic fitness can do it. In the monsoon the trail is slippery and leeches are common.

### Are permits included? When should I book?

Yes. The trek is inside a forest reserve and needs a Karnataka Forest Department permit, which is included and arranged for you. Permits are limited and sell out, so book at least two weeks ahead where you can. The trek runs only when permits are issued for your date. Expect a bag and plastic check at the forest checkpoint; cameras and drones carry an extra forest fee.

### What are the stay and food like?

One night at a homestay near Samse, on shared basis with separate zones for men and women. Facilities are comfortable but basic. All meals are vegetarian. There is no dinner stop on the way, so please eat before boarding. Alcohol, intoxicants and smoking are not allowed at any point during the trip.

### Is it safe to join solo or with strangers?

Yes. Most people on this trek come solo or in small groups. The group is led by a trained trek leader together with a local guide, a female trek leader accompanies every group, and sleeping areas are separate for men and women.
