A Valparai trip from Bangalore fits in one weekend if you sleep on the bus both ways. You leave on Friday night, climb the 40 hairpin bends from Pollachi on Saturday morning, and are back in Bangalore early on Monday.

How do you do a Valparai trip from Bangalore in a weekend?

Take a Friday-night sleeper to Pollachi (8 to 11 hours), then a government bus 64 km up the ghat to Valparai. Leave Valparai by 5 pm on Sunday for a night bus home. For four friends sharing rooms and a taxi, it costs about ₹3,500 to ₹4,750 each before food (October 2026 prices).

The short answer

  • No direct bus: go Bangalore to Pollachi overnight, then up the ghat.

  • Since 1 November 2025, every vehicle entering Valparai needs an e-pass: check tnepass.tn.gov.in before you go.

  • Tourist vehicles were stopped at the Aliyar checkpost from 6 pm to 7 am while buses kept running (reported 2023, still noted in April 2026): go up by day.

  • Stay out of the water: a 2023 district order bars wading, bathing and photos at the listed river spots.

The weekend at a glance

The plan is two nights on a bus and one night in Valparai. Here is the timetable, built from the redBus listings for Friday 23 and Sunday 25 October 2026:

  • Friday, 8:15 to 10:15 pm: sleeper bus leaves Bangalore for Pollachi

  • Saturday, 5:30 to 7 am: arrive in Pollachi

  • Saturday morning: government bus up the ghat, in Valparai by late morning

  • Saturday afternoon: tea estate roads, then Nallamudi viewpoint before entry ends at 6 pm

  • Sunday morning: Sholayar Dam and Chinna Kallar Falls

  • Sunday, by 5 pm: bus down to Pollachi

  • Sunday, 8:30 to 10 pm: sleeper bus back to Bangalore

  • Monday, 4:30 to 6 am: arrive in Bangalore

You lose almost no leave, but you also spend about 20 hours on buses. If that sounds like too much for one night in the hills, take Monday off and stay two nights.

Bangalore to Pollachi by overnight bus

There is no direct bus from Bangalore to Valparai on redBus, so Pollachi is your gateway. redBus listed 26 buses on the Bengaluru to Pollachi route for Friday 23 October 2026, 25 of them leaving after 6 pm.

  • Fares: about ₹750 to ₹1,190 for an AC or non-AC sleeper on that Friday

  • Journey time: 8 to 11 hours, arriving 5:30 to 7 am

  • Boarding points: Silk Board, Bommanahalli, Bellandur, Anand Rao Circle and others

  • Coming back: 31 buses listed for Sunday 25 October, at about ₹1,050 to ₹1,850

Sunday-night fares were higher than Friday's, so book the return when you book the outward bus. Pick a bus that drops you at the Pollachi bus stand: that is where the buses to Valparai leave from.

Pollachi to Valparai: the 40 hairpin bends

Valparai is 64 km from Pollachi and about 3,500 feet above sea level, with around 40 steep hairpin bends on the way up, according to the Coimbatore district tourism page. State government buses run up from Pollachi through the day.

Plan on two to three hours on the bus, with stops at Aliyar and the tea estate villages. The government bus is the cheapest way up and needs no planning: you pay the conductor in cash. The fare isn't listed on redBus or other booking sites (October 2026), so carry small notes.

If you would rather hire a cab from Pollachi, remember the checkpost rule below: an early cab may simply wait at Aliyar until the gate opens.

Other ways up: Coimbatore or your own car

Coimbatore works too. Valparai is 102 km from Coimbatore, which has the nearest airport and a railway junction, and state government buses run up from there as well, according to the district page. It is a longer hill bus than from Pollachi, so use it only if your bus or train to Coimbatore suits you better.

Driving yourself, it is roughly 430 km, depending on the route. You need the e-pass and should reach Aliyar well before 6 pm, which means leaving Bangalore by early morning rather than at night.

The rules that changed: e-pass, 6 pm gate and plastics

Drivers need an e-pass and should clear the Aliyar checkpost before 6 pm; bus riders keep moving, and nobody may bring plastics up. The details:

  • E-pass: since 1 November 2025, every vehicle entering Valparai needs an e-pass from tnepass.tn.gov.in, DT Next reported. You can also register on the spot at the Aliyar and Malakkappara checkposts. The report doesn't say whether government bus passengers need anything: if in doubt, ask at the Aliyar checkpost.

  • The 6 pm gate: the forest department stopped tourist vehicles at the Aliyar checkpost from 6 pm to 7 am, DT Next reported in October 2023, while buses kept running. Onmanorama's April 2026 safety guide still says entry is restricted after 6 pm.

  • Plastics: tourists are barred from bringing plastics up the hill, according to the same 2025 DT Next report. Carry a steel bottle.

What a Valparai trip costs per head

For a group of four sharing rooms and a taxi, the weekend comes to about ₹3,500 to ₹4,750 each, before food and entry fees. Solo, the same plan costs about ₹5,800 to ₹7,000, mostly because you pay for the room and the taxi alone.

Group of four, per head (October 2026):

  • Bus out, Friday: ₹750 to ₹1,190

  • Bus back, Sunday: ₹1,050 to ₹1,850

  • Pollachi–Valparai bus, both ways: allow ₹200 (an estimate)

  • One night, two to a room: from ₹500 (rooms from ₹1,000, per Onmanorama, April 2026)

  • Taxi for two days of sightseeing: about ₹1,000 (an SUV is listed at ₹2,000 a day on CabBazar's Valparai page, October 2026)

Solo, the buses cost the same, but the room is from ₹1,000 and a small car for two days is about ₹2,800 (listed at ₹1,400 a day). You can cut the taxi by using town buses and shared jeeps, but you will see fewer viewpoints.

Food and entry fees come on top in every version. Budget for three meals a day in town.

When the hosted trip is the better deal

A hosted trip makes sense when you are going alone, or don't want to plan the buses, the e-pass and the ghat timings. A verified host's Valparai Backpacking Weekend Getaway was listed from ₹5,999 plus 5% GST in October 2026, close to the solo DIY cost.

According to the listing, that covers road transport from Bangalore and back, a shared room, one breakfast and a trip captain. Other meals and entry fees are extra, the same as going on your own. Check the trip card below for current dates and prices.

A group of four friends who are happy to plan will save roughly ₹1,500 to ₹2,800 each by doing it themselves. A solo traveller saves little, and gets a group to share the weekend with.

Escapes to Valparai

What to see in two days

Two days covers the main viewpoints, a waterfall and the tea estates. Hire the taxi for both days and let the driver order the stops.

Most of these stops have a spot on, or next to, the 2023 danger list (below). At those, look from the viewpoint or the road, stay out of the water, and follow the boards on photos.

  • Nallamudi viewpoint: about 15 km from town, with a wide view over the hills; entry 9 am to 6 pm (Onmanorama, April 2026). The valley below, Nallamudi-Poonjolai, is on the list.

  • Chinna Kallar Falls: about 10 km from town and a 300 m walk. On the list: stay on the path and off the rocks.

  • Sholayar Dam: about 20 km from Valparai. The river in front of the dam is on the list.

  • Tea estate roads: the Waterfalls estate and others along the ghat road. Tiger Valley at Waterfalls Estate is on the list.

  • Aliyar Dam: at the foot of the ghat, a stop on the way down if you go by taxi. Upper Aliyar Dam is on the list.

The Valparai trips and travel guides page lists every departure on GoWeekender, with dates and prices.

Water and wildlife: the two safety rules

Valparai's two real risks are its rivers and its elephants. Both have clear rules.

Stay out of the water. In late October 2023 the Coimbatore district administration barred tourists from going into the rivers at 20 spots it identified as dangerous (the report names 19 of them), after five college students drowned, Outlook Traveller reported. Bathing or taking photos near those spots is not allowed either, the 2023 report says. Boards on site have the final word, so read them before you take out a phone.

The list includes popular stops: Koolangal (Koozhangal) River, Chinnakallar, Thalanar Waterfalls, Nallamudi-Poonjolai Valley, Tiger Valley at Waterfalls Estate, Sholayar Arch, the river in front of Sholayar Dam and Upper Aliyar Dam. Warning boards mark the spots. Follow them, and ask your driver where you can stop.

Respect the elephants. Herds move through the tea estates. The Nature Conservation Foundation, working with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, runs an early-warning system in Valparai that uses SMS alerts, red alert lights and announcements on buses, according to NCF. If you see a red light flashing, or a local tells you a herd is near, change your route.

Where to stay in Valparai

Stay in or near Valparai town, so you can reach the bus stand and the taxi stand on foot. Onmanorama's April 2026 guide puts homestays from ₹500 per person and rooms from ₹1,000, with old plantation bungalows at ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 a night.

A group of four can take two rooms in a homestay, or one bungalow if you want the estate experience. Ask about hot water and power backup, since both vary.

When to go

October to May is the usual window, according to Onmanorama's 2026 guide. Chinna Kallar Falls is at its heaviest just after the monsoon, which is also when the rocks are most slippery.

The roads are wet and the ghat is slower in heavy rain, so give yourself extra time on the way down on any rainy Sunday. Pack a rain layer, a light fleece for the evenings and cash, since phone signal is weak across most plantations.

Doing Valparai as a group of friends

A group of four is the right size for this plan: two rooms, one taxi, and the costs split cleanly. A bigger group may want its own tempo traveller from Bangalore. Any hired vehicle, a taxi from Pollachi included, needs the e-pass and must respect the 6 pm gate.

  • Decide the return bus first: everything on Sunday works back from it.

  • Put one person in charge of the taxi and the cash kitty.

  • Choose a stay near the bus stand, in case the plan changes.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Valparai from Bangalore?

About 430 km on the bus route: redBus lists Bengaluru to Pollachi at 366 km, and Valparai is another 64 km up the ghat. Driving distances vary with the road you pick. Allow 8 to 11 hours to Pollachi by overnight bus and two to three hours more by bus up the hill.

Is there a direct bus from Bangalore to Valparai?

Not on redBus as of October 2026. Take an overnight sleeper from Bangalore to Pollachi, where 26 buses were listed for a Friday night, then a government bus from the Pollachi bus stand up to Valparai.

Do I need an e-pass to visit Valparai?

If you drive or hire a vehicle, yes. Since 1 November 2025 every vehicle entering Valparai needs an e-pass from tnepass.tn.gov.in, or a spot registration at the Aliyar or Malakkappara checkpost, according to DT Next. The report doesn't say whether government bus passengers need one.

Can we drive up to Valparai at night?

Plan not to. The forest department stopped tourist vehicles at the Aliyar checkpost from 6 pm to 7 am when DT Next reported it in October 2023, and a 2026 Onmanorama guide still says entry is restricted after 6 pm. The 40 hairpin bends are also hard to drive in the dark.

Is two days enough for Valparai?

Yes, for the main sights. Two days covers Nallamudi viewpoint, Chinna Kallar Falls, Sholayar Dam and the tea estate roads, with a taxi. A third day lets you slow down and sleep properly before the night bus home.

How much does a Valparai trip from Bangalore cost per person?

At October 2026 prices, about ₹3,500 to ₹4,750 each for four friends sharing rooms and a taxi, before food and entry fees. Solo, about ₹5,800 to ₹7,000. A hosted weekend on GoWeekender costs about the same as going solo.

Can you swim in the rivers at Valparai?

No. Since October 2023 tourists have been barred from going into the rivers at 20 spots in Valparai, including Koozhangal River and Chinnakallar, after five college students drowned. Bathing and photos near those spots aren't allowed either. Follow the warning boards.

Are there elephants in Valparai?

Yes. Herds move through the tea estates, and a Nature Conservation Foundation warning system uses SMS alerts, red alert lights and bus announcements to warn residents. Don't walk estate roads after dark, and never leave a vehicle to photograph elephants.

What is the best time for a Valparai trip?

October to May is the usual window, according to Onmanorama. Chinna Kallar Falls is heaviest just after the monsoon, when the rocks are also most slippery. Carry a rain layer in any month, and allow extra time on the ghat road in heavy rain.

Can I bring plastic bottles to Valparai?

Plan not to. Tourists are barred from bringing plastics to the hills under the rules that came with the November 2025 e-pass, according to DT Next. Carry a steel or other reusable bottle and refill it at your stay.
