The trip
Kudremukh, the horse-faced peak of the Western Ghats, is the third-highest summit in Karnataka and one of the most rewarding treks within reach of Bangalore. It sits inside Kudremukh National Park in Chikmagalur district, where clouds roll low over endless green hills and the trail changes character every hour.
We leave Bangalore on the evening of departure and drive overnight to a homestay near the trailhead. After an early breakfast, a jeep takes the group through coffee country to the trek base, where the forest permits are checked and the day begins. The route crosses a stream almost immediately, climbs through ferns and tall grass to Ontimara, the lone tree, then winds through wet shola forest and open meadows before the final, steeper push past the ruins of a British-era rest house to the 1,894 m (6,214 ft) summit.
It is a long day: about 22 km there and back, usually 8 to 10 hours on foot. It suits people with good fitness or a few treks behind them, and first-timers who are ready to train for it. Expect mud, stream crossings and, in the wet months, leeches.
Back at the homestay there is high tea and a hot dinner. The next morning is easy on the legs: a walk through the Samse tea estate, then the Hoysala-era Chennakeshava Temple at Belur on the drive home, reaching Bangalore around 10 PM.
Trek permits, forest entry fees, the jeep transfers, a trained trek leader and a local guide, the homestay night and the listed meals are all included.

Questions about this trip
What should I carry?
A 30L backpack plus a 10L daypack for the trek; hiking shoes with good grip, floaters, a raincoat and a phone cover; 2 water bottles and a lunch box with spoon; 3 T-shirts, quick-dry pants, shorts, socks, a warm layer and a towel; toiletries; personal medicines and a Dettol spray (it helps against leeches); a power bank, poly bags for wet clothes and shoes, and some cash. Also carry a hard copy of the same photo ID you booked with.
How hard is the Kudremukh trek?
It is a long day: about 22 km there and back, usually 8 to 10 hours, up to 1,894 m (6,214 ft). The trail has stream crossings, forest sections and a steeper final climb through grassland. It is rated moderate to hard. First-timers with good basic fitness can do it, but the distance makes it demanding, so some walking or stair practice beforehand helps.
Are trek permits included? When should I book?
Yes. Kudremukh is inside a national park and needs a Karnataka Forest Department permit, which is included and arranged for you. Permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially for weekend dates, so book well in advance. The trek runs only when permits are issued for your date; the permit is issued against your ID, so the ID you carry must match the one you booked with.
What are the stay and food like?
One night at a homestay near the trailhead (rooms, dorms or tents on multiple sharing, with separate zones for men and women). Facilities are comfortable but basic. All meals are vegetarian. Please have dinner before boarding on the first evening. Alcohol, intoxicants and smoking are not allowed at any point during the trip.
Is it safe to join solo or with strangers?
Yes. Most people on this trek come solo or in small groups. The group is led by a trained trek leader together with a local guide, sleeping areas are separate for men and women, and the trek leader stays with the group from pickup to drop.
