The trip
Pondicherry, officially Puducherry, is a coastal Union Territory where French colonial streets meet Tamil town life and the Bay of Bengal. It rewards a slow pace: pastel walls draped in bougainvillaea, quiet churches, cafés and bakeries, a long seafront promenade and an ocean that never gets old.
We leave Bangalore on Friday night and drive through the night, arriving in time for sunrise at Rock Beach. After checking in and breakfast at the stay, we head to Auroville, the experimental township known as the City of Dawn, and see the golden Matrimandir from the outside. The afternoon is for the French Colony, or White Town: colonial buildings, colourful doors, boutiques, cafés and some of the best handmade chocolate in the south. In the evening we are back on Rock Beach, which comes alive with street food carts, performers and seaside cafés.
Sunday begins with breakfast and check-out, then a visit to Notre Dame des Anges, one of the oldest churches in Puducherry and the only one that holds mass in three languages. From there you are free to wander White Town at your own pace, past the Gandhi statue, the French War Memorial, Bharati Park, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, art galleries and the craft bazaar, with time to shop and lunch at a café. In the late afternoon we glide through the backwaters on a mangrove forest boat ride before starting the drive home, reaching Bangalore late on Sunday night.
The stay is in AC rooms with pool access on triple or quad sharing, and breakfast is included on both days. Lunches, dinners and the mangrove boat ride are paid on the spot. A trip captain stays with the group throughout, and the trip is alcohol- and smoke-free.
