Group travel with strangers in India mostly means one thing: you book a seat on a hosted trip, board a tempo traveller or mini bus on a Friday night, and spend the weekend with people you met at the pickup point. Below: how that weekend runs, what a seat costs and who it suits.

The main ways Indians travel with strangers

Trips with strangers come in four formats. Prices below are GoWeekender listings on 23 Oct 2026, when its departures left only from Bengaluru and Delhi, with none from Mumbai, Pune or other cities.

Hosted weekend backpacking trips

The default: a host sells seats on a fixed departure with a Friday-night pickup, a trip captain's timetable and a Sunday-night drop. Stays, transport and some meals are bundled. 2-day, 1-night weekend trips from Bengaluru were listed at ₹4,199 (Kumara Parvatha trek) to ₹6,599 (Munnar), with Coorg and Hampi from ₹4,599. Longer 3-day, 2-night trips from Bengaluru, several billed as long-weekend getaways, ran from ₹6,499 to ₹10,999 (Varkala, Alleppey and Kochi). Backpacker hostels and travel communities sell similar short trips, often to their own guests.

Suits: solo travellers and pairs who want a full weekend without planning it.

Day treks and sunrise trips

You are back home the same day. From Bengaluru, the Mandaragiri Hill and DD Hills one-day trek was listed at ₹1,299 and the Makalidurga sunrise trek at ₹1,599.

Suits: first-timers testing the idea before a full weekend.

Longer Himalayan trips from Delhi

Three to five days with an overnight journey each way. GoWeekender's 8 trips from Delhi ran from ₹6,500 (3-day Jibhi and Tirthan) to ₹14,000 (5-day Manali, Kasol and Jibhi).

Suits: people who can take a day or two off and want the Himalaya rather than a quick weekend.

Matched groups that pick a trip together (GoWeekender tribes)

A strangers weekend, hour by hour

The easiest way to know if this is for you is to read a real timetable. This is the Coorg Backpacking Trip from Bengaluru, a 2-day, 1-night weekend, as its host listed it on 23 Oct 2026. Kodagu district puts Coorg at about 257 km from Bengaluru, per the district's official site.

Friday night

• 9:30 PM: first pickup at Udupi Grand, HSR Layout. Later pickups at Marathahalli (10 PM), Domlur (10:30 PM) and Yeshwanthpur (11 PM).

• Overnight: about 8 hours in an AC tempo traveller or mini bus. Expect broken sleep.

Saturday

• 6:00 AM: reach a homestay inside a coffee estate, freshen up, breakfast. Early check-in depends on availability.

• 9:00 AM: 4x4 jeep up to Mandalpatti, about an hour each way. You pay for the jeep yourself.

• 12:30 PM: lunch in Madikeri, also on you.

• 2:00 PM: Abbey Falls.

• 4:30 PM: sunset at Raja's Seat (entry included), then half an hour at Madikeri market.

• 7:00 PM: bonfire, dinner and music at the homestay.

Sunday

• 7:30 AM: slow morning in the coffee estate.

• 9:00 AM: breakfast and check-out.

• 10:30 AM: Harangi elephant camp and backwaters (entry and activities extra).

• 12:30 PM: Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe.

• 2:00 PM: lunch at Kushalnagar, then the drive home from 3 PM.

• Around 11:30 PM: drop-offs in Bengaluru.

So you sleep one night on the road and one in a bed, and Sunday's ride home takes about eight and a half hours. Plan a slow Monday morning.

How big is the group on a trip with strangers?

Expect up to about 20 people on a tempo traveller trip, and more on a mini bus. The Force Traveller, the van usually meant by "tempo traveller", comes in 12, 19 or 20 seats plus the driver in its longest model, according to Force Motors' specifications. Departures don't always sell every seat, and hosted weekend listings rarely publish a cap.

Ask the host three things before you pay:

• How many seats are sold on your date, and the maximum.

• The gender split, because rooms usually follow it. The Hampi listing says room allotment "is done according to the gender ratio of the group".

• Room sharing: the Coorg trip is triple and quad sharing, the Hampi trip triple-sharing cottages or dorms.

If you want a small group, a matched tribe is the better format. On GoWeekender a tribe is 2 to 10 travellers, and its creator can cap it lower.

What a group trip with strangers costs per head, and how it compares with solo

On a hosted weekend you pay one seat price per head, solo or not. For the Coorg trip from Bengaluru, listed on GoWeekender on 23 Oct 2026, that is ₹4,599 plus 5% GST and a 2.42% convenience fee at checkout, about ₹4,946 in all, before two lunches, the Mandalpatti jeep and other self-sponsored extras.

The Coorg breakdown:

• Seat price: ₹4,599.

• GST at 5%: ₹230, so ₹4,829 before the convenience fee.

• Convenience fee: 2.42% of price plus GST, about ₹117, added at checkout. That makes about ₹4,946.

• Included: transport both ways, tolls and driver allowance, one night in a homestay on triple or quad sharing, two breakfasts and one dinner, Raja's Seat entry, and a trip captain.

• On top: two lunches, the Mandalpatti jeep, Harangi activities and anything you buy.

Going solo on your own can cost more wherever the price is per room or per vehicle. One example: the state-run KSTDC Hotel Mayura Valley View in Madikeri lists a non-AC double room at ₹2,659 a night at weekends, before GST (seen 23 Oct 2026). Alone, you pay all of it. Two people sharing pay about ₹1,330 each. On the hosted trip, the roughly ₹4,946 you pay at checkout already covers your bed, transport both ways and three meals. Add your own bus fares and sightseeing cabs before deciding which is cheaper.

Compare all 47 trips from Bengaluru the same way, and check each listing for GST: the Coorg, Hampi and Kasol trips all add 5%.

What goes wrong on trips with strangers

The common problems on these trips come from vague listings rather than bad company. Watch for these.

• "Self-sponsored" stacks up. Lunches, jeeps, coracle rides and entry fees are often excluded. Add them up before you compare prices.

• The timetable is fixed. If you want two more hours at a waterfall, you don't get them. The vehicle leaves when the captain says.

• Late night, early start. An overnight drive means you reach a hill station at 6 AM on four or five hours of broken sleep.

• Weather is your risk. The Coorg listing excludes costs from bad weather, landslides and protests.

• One loud group. If six friends book together and you are the solo seventh, ask the host about the mix on your date.

How to check a host before you pay

Check these before you pay:

• A written cancellation and refund policy, including what happens if the host calls off a departure for weather.

• Reviews from past departures on the listing itself, not only Instagram comments. If a listing has none yet, ask the host for photos from a past departure or the number of someone who went.

• The trip captain's name and phone number, shared before the day.

• Payment through the platform or to a business account, never a large advance to someone's personal UPI.

• The "not included" list, read line by line.

• Pickup points and the expected drop time in writing, so you can plan the ride home from the drop point.

Who group travel with strangers suits, and who should skip it

It works well for:

• Solo travellers whose friends never commit. You pay one seat and get a whole trip.

• People new to a city. A weekend with a vehicle full of locals is a quick way to meet people outside work.

• First-timers to a place who don't want to work out buses, jeeps and homestays.

• Pairs who want a livelier weekend than a trip for two.

Skip it, or pick a different format, if:

• You can't sleep in a moving vehicle. Friday's overnight drive and eight-plus hours back on Sunday are part of the price.

• You need your own room. Hosted weekends are built on shared rooms.

• You hate fixed timetables or want to linger.

• You want a quiet trip. The Coorg trip, for one, schedules a bonfire night with music.

Is group travel with strangers actually growing?

Group travel is growing, but the best-known figure doesn't measure travel with strangers: Airbnb's 55% counts any booking with more than two guests. In its Never the Same report, published on 1 June 2026, Airbnb says domestic group trips by Indian Gen Z on its platform grew almost 55% year on year, based on its own booking data. So the figure says more about friends and families travelling together than about strangers.

The same report's YouGov survey of 2,012 people aged 18 to 29 found that 7 in 10 would rather take three short trips than one long holiday. Short trips need someone free on the same weekend, which is the problem a hosted seat or a tribe solves for a solo traveller.

How joining a trip with strangers works on GoWeekender
